Apply to The Berkeley Angle: Daily Californian’s High School Journalism Intensive to learn the fundamentals of news reporting and opinion writing from UC Berkeley's independent student newspaper, one of the country's most established and renowned college news outlets.

All reporters will have the chance to be published in The Daily Californian under the one-on-one guidance of our editors. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn from and engage with Daily Cal alumni working at newspapers nationwide, including CalMatters, as well as instructors from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

There will be two sessions:

Session A: June 22nd to June 26th
Session B: July 27th to July 31st

Each session will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. over Zoom. Current and former news editors, training managers, our managing editor and Editor in Chief will be conducting the program. The curriculum in both sessions is the same — choose whichever works best with your summer schedule!

Once the training week is complete, each student will work on reporting a story to be published in the Daily Californian. The intensive is open to high schoolers at all skill levels. All work is conducted remotely; students must have access to a computer with internet access. Need-based scholarships are available.

Here's a sneak peak at what a typical day* in our summer camp will include:

9 am: Public records requests
10 am: Legal reporting
11 am: Case study on Title IX investigation and handling sensitive stories
12 pm: "Know Your Rights" — Student Press Law Center guest lecture

📝 Day 4 (tentative)
9 am: Visual training by Creative Director & Magazine Editor
10 am: Federal reporting
11 am: Mock protest coverage (practicing interview skills)
12:30 pm: Work with an editor to pitch your own story
