The Better Black Business Initiative (B3I) is a Minnesota-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and public charity (EIN: 33-3071623). We exist to expand economic mobility in Black communities by delivering culturally responsive programming that supports entrepreneurship, workforce readiness, and long-term financial stability.

B3I addresses systemic barriers that limit access to opportunity by combining training, coaching, mentorship, and practical supports that meet people where they are and help them move forward with clarity and confidence. Our work is organized through three core programs:

I’m a BOSS Youth Business Camp introduces youth ages 12 to 18 to entrepreneurship fundamentals, financial literacy, and leadership development, helping the next generation build skills, confidence, and a future-focused mindset.

Lock-Up to Lift-Up supports justice impacted individuals through entrepreneurship education, mentorship, and life skills development, offering a structured path to rebuild, provide for their families, and contribute meaningfully to their communities through business ownership.

Ready to Rise Workforce Pathway prepares underserved Black youth and justice impacted individuals for employment through job readiness training, employer-aligned expectations, and retention supports that strengthen stability after hire.

Our mission is grounded in cooperative economics and community-driven progress. We believe thriving Black-owned businesses and stable, quality employment are both essential pathways to stronger families, stronger neighborhoods, and generational equity.

B3I was founded by LeBrent Speed, Founder and Chairman of the Advisory Committee, and is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors led by Cassandra Davis Speed, Chairwoman of the Board. Day-to-day implementation is led by B3I’s operations team. No individual holds ownership in B3I or its assets, and all contributions directly support programs and initiatives aligned with our charitable mission.
