Every summer, leatherback sea turtles haul themselves out of the ocean and onto the beaches of Costa Rica. But when nesting season ends and they slip back into the water, we lose them.

Unlike other marine turtles, whose post-nesting migrations follow more predictable paths to foraging grounds, leatherbacks are built for the deep sea and open ocean. Where they go after nesting remains one of the great unanswered questions in sea turtle science, and one we can no longer afford to leave unanswered.

This summer, The Leatherback Trust is undertaking landmark tagging and tracking research. Working from the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, our team will deploy satellite transmitters on ten nesting leatherbacks and follow them in real time, point by point, across international waters, tracking ocean currents, water temperatures, and goal-oriented swimming behavior to map not just where they go, but why.

Cada verano, las tortugas baulas salen del océano y llegan a las playas de Costa Rica. Pero cuando termina la temporada de anidación y regresan al agua, las perdemos.

A diferencia de otras tortugas marinas, cuyas migraciones post-anidación siguen rutas más predecibles hacia sus zonas de alimentación, las baulas están hechas para las profundidades del mar y el océano abierto. A dónde van después de anidar sigue siendo una de las grandes preguntas sin respuesta en la ciencia de las tortugas marinas, y una que ya no podemos dejar sin responder.

Este verano, The Leatherback Trust está llevando a cabo una investigación de marcaje y seguimiento única en su tipo. Trabajando desde la costa caribeña de Costa Rica, nuestro equipo desplegará transmisores satelitales en diez tortugas baulas durante su anidación y las seguirá en tiempo real, punto por punto, a través de aguas internacionales, rastreando las corrientes oceánicas, las temperaturas del agua y el comportamiento de nado orientado a objetivos para mapear no solo a dónde van, sino por qué.
