Lisa Shirk's Story
I recently visited the exhibit Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment, which made its way from the Musée d’Orsay to Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art this Fall. Following along with the origins of Impressionism, I was struck that this body of work, and later this movement of work, was born out of crisis, pain and loss. In such a time, the people looked to artists for hope and direction and artists knew they had a unique gift, voice and perspective to offer for such a time. As the exhibit states, “In this context of crisis, artists began to rethink their art and explore new directions. A little “clan of rebels” painted scenes of modern life, and landscapes sketched in the open air, in pale hues and with the lightest of touches. As one observer noted, “What they seem above all to be aiming at is an impression”.” They brought beauty and nature into a season of darkness and death that had not been done before. People were hungry for that, they just couldn’t articulate those needs on their own. That visionary “clan of rebels” where the then unknown Monets, Reniors, and Cezannés…
We are experiencing our own cultural crises and ‘black and white status quo’ falls short- sometimes you need to cultivate space and creativity for impressions to emerge. Our collective interior life desperately needs to be awakened and Vita Poetica helps do just that- imbue a sense of wonder and abundance into the questions we are asking, often discovered through faith and art. Supporting this work will pay dividends for our communities and artists alike.
