I want to stir up local support for Domestic Abuse Project (DAP), where I recently accepted a board seat. DAP’s mission is to eradicate domestic violence: an issue that hits very close to home for me. As you may know, I grew up in an abusive setting; and as a result, I have been more open and vulnerable to it in adulthood. I have done a lot of work to break the patterns that were hardwired into me, and now I pray that my hard work will empower and enable my children to make better decisions as they grow. But… we can’t go it alone and need more than prayers. We need companies like DAP, and potential sponsors like you (either personally or through your company), to work together to fund programs that heal individuals, families, and communities. Its very hard to share such personal information, and it's this negative stigma we need to break in order to heal and make serious progress.
DAP can make real change. I made the decision to focus my time and effort on DAP because of its legacy (founded in 1979) and approach. DAP focuses not only on victims but also on the harm-doers. While it doesn’t feel as warm and fuzzy to help people who have done terrible things, we can’t work to free communities of domestic violence and abuse unless we address the root of the problem. And that root is more often than not the harm-doer who needs treatment and care for their own experienced trauma.
We are gearing up for our October fundraising event and looking for local sponsors whose values line up with our mission and that would be willing to contribute. Please let me know if we can set up a call to explore more about how your donations will help move us closer to our goal. I plan to host dinner and drinks at my house the evening of the virtual event for those interested in participating (see enclosed information).
