Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes are already federally threatened and listed as threatened or endangered in every state in which they still exist. I grew up occasionally finding them near a lake where we went to summer camp or went swimming, and I didn't realize just how at risk they are. Half of their wetland habitats have been lost, the rest are fragmented and isolated, and populations right now are on track to die out from inbreeding within the next century. We have a real chance to reconnect some populations, preserve others, and increase gene flow so these little swamp rattlers can continue to persist in some of the most sensitive and unique wetland habitats anywhere in the world.
