When I received my Still’s Disease diagnosis, I was perplexed. In 20 years of nursing, I’d never even heard of autoinflammatory diseases, much less Still’s Disease. I remember distinctly my rheumatologist telling me to write down “autoinflammatory” on the notepad I’d brought to my appointment. I’m sure I looked at him a little askance as my brain had registered it as autoimmune. He said, “look at that again.” He explained that autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases differ in the part of your immune system that is “malfunctioning.” In simple terms, autoinflammatory diseases affect your innate immune system and autoimmune diseases affect your acquired immune system. Autoinflammatory diseases are very rare, and I had a very difficult time finding information about my new diagnosis. AiArthritis was one of the few sites that gave me meaningful information about the disease including printable patient pamphlets and wallet cards. Through them, I also found an international still’s support group where I could ask questions and learn from fellow patients. Treatment options are extremely limited. I hope that by raising money, it will bring awareness and research to this rare disease that effects my life every single day.
