Gentle Acres is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal sanctuary located in Joshua Tree, California. Established in 2019, we proudly obtained our official non-profit status in 2023. Our sanctuary provides a safe and permanent home to over 20 animals while offering volunteer rattlesnake relocation services to protect both local wildlife and our community.

Unlike adoption-focused rescues, we are committed to lifelong care for each animal we accept. This ensures every resident is provided with the resources, environment, and individualized care they need to thrive. However, this also means that our ability to accept new animals depends on our capacity to provide for them responsibly. Sponsorship plays a vital role in enabling us to maintain our current residents’ well-being while opening the door to help more animals in need.

Our residents come from diverse circumstances—some from neglectful or unsafe situations, others from loving homes that could no longer sustain their care. We approach every animal with compassion, patience, and an animal-led philosophy, tailoring their care and training based on their unique histories and comfort levels. This ethos fosters a calm, harmonious environment where all of our animals, from the largest horse to the smallest chicken, can feel secure and respected.

Operating in the high desert presents unique challenges, including limited access to pasture and costly water resources. Our horses, goats, tortoises, and pigs rely entirely on hay and feed, and during the summer months, we invest significantly in keeping our animals hydrated and cool. Every dollar raised goes directly toward providing these essential needs, ensuring our animals’ comfort and health.

Looking ahead, our vision is to expand Gentle Acres with a mustang rehabilitation center. This program would focus on adopting and gentling BLM mustangs who have been overlooked for adoption, providing them with the training and care they need to find loving forever homes. It is an ambitious goal, but one we are passionate about pursuing with the right support.
