We lost Joanne right at a year ago on July 22 while she was waiting for her second liver transplant. Some days it seems unfathomable that she's gone and every day we miss her like crazy. I am thankful though that Billy's sick liver hung on for 24 years and she fought like a banshee to stay with us.
So in March when we discovered that the Transplant Games of America was coming to Birmingham in July of 2024 my first feeling was one of bittersweetness because Joanne had always wanted the Games here. However, that feeling was quickly replaced by excitement because if you ever spent any time talking to Jo, the Games was going to come up pretty quickly. She LOVED the Transplant Games because she recognized that she was living her second chance at life, living her life for two--herself and her donor. And what better way to show that your transplant is successful than get in a venue with tons of other people that have had the same gift and compete together?!?! It was like a giant group of miracle people walking around at a big transplant revival and she total LOVED it.
Joanne was the MOST compliant recipient and she helped coach and motivate so many others to keep the same behavior. Even when she didn't feel great (and she never felt 100%) she'd never admit it and keep on trucking.
So, in memory of our sweet Joanne, who co-managed Team Alabama with me for FIVE GAMES from 2002-2010 and continued to work with the team afterward...we dedicate the 2024 Games. Steve has given us permission to open a memorial fundraiser that will be used for athletes and their families that are having trouble raising the required dollars due to socio-economic challenges. Joanne's niece Felicia and I will help organize the distribution of funds and if all aren't used they will carry over to the 2026 Games. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
