Ty Benoit's Story
This summer, I will take my second of three trips to the Institute for G.O.D. undergrad curriculum. This trip, known as Immersion 1, will focus on familiarizing me with the people, culture, and language of the region I visit. I have felt called to the Philippines since my second year in high school, and I am so excited to finally have the opportunity to visit and meet our cooperatives there.
My great-grandmother fleeing to America from World War II is part of my family's history. I am super thankful for this opportunity to reconnect with this part of my family and not only that, but go as a servant to them. I believe God has called me to this region in particular, and I look forward to this being the first of many times I visit. My personal goals when I get there are to establish three relationships that I keep up with after returning home with our cooperatives, know five important cultural norms that I need to use in order to show respect and love to those I serve there, and have a basic working vocabulary in Tagolog. Beyond that, I will also be praying daily, looking for needs I can meet. This is a long-term consideration, not a short-term one. To best serve these people, I need to not only learn about them but also need to grow in my other skills. I hope to have God's vision of some more tangible projects I can work towards by the end of this trip.
After the many lessons on proper mission work I received from last summer trip to Uganda, I feel very excited to use these skills on a trip that is a bit less facilitated and puts more work into our hands. We get the chance to use the skills we learned last summer, such as empowerment, job creation, and education, even if it's just on a small scale. Please pray for my trip and team as we prepare to serve these people the best we can. Also for my relationships there to be rooted in God's foundation and long-standing. Thank you so much!
