Mia McClendon's Story

Mia was diagnosed with Glut1 Deficiency Syndrome a few months before her first birthday. She started the Medical Ketogenic Diet shortly after receiving her diagnosis. This is currently the only treatment for Glut1 as is aims to use ketone bodies instead of glucose to fuel her brain and body. While Mia has seen benefits from being on the diet ketones are an imperfect replacement for glucose. She is developmentally delayed compared to other kids her age. But each day she makes progress using a walker and learning to communicate with an AAC device. Mia loves the outdoors. She love jumping on her trampoline and swinging. This year's fundraiser means a lot to our family. The possibility of new treatments gives us a lot of hope. Hope not only for Mia, but all individuals with Glut1. Hope that in the future we will have more options to help her grow and thrive. Matching funds for clinical trials for new treatments is HUGE! And your support can help make that happen. Thank you!
