My father was a Vietnam Vet in the United States Army and my grandfather (his father) was a WWII POW. My dad (John) was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer April of 2023. He didn't talk much about his time in Vietnam, but he poured his heart and soul into the American Legion or any function related to the armed services. He found his purpose in serving there, holding the title of commander and serving on the board for many years. His greatest passion during his time there became the children and youth programs. He was committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring programs that educated our youth to various service related topics. He loved going to elementary schools teaching the young students about US Flag etiquette and the why behind it. I could go on for paragraphs about all that he did for his country after the war.
Fast forward to how 50 Mile March peaked my interest. As I said he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in April of 2023. It was a very aggressive cancer but he was ready to face it head on, he wanted more time with his 8 grand children and family. In August 27th, 2023 my girlfriends and I went on our annual biking tour. We ended at Nebraska Brewing Company. Pulling up we noticed there was a huge event going on, it seemed to be open to the public so we went in. I was curious and began asking questions, many to walkers who had just completed the race. I don't really know how to explain it but it was at that moment I wanted to participate, so much so that I signed up shortly thereafter. I purchased a shirt for may dad (black and gold) and couldn't wait to give it to him. I explained all I could to him about what the 50 Mile March entailed and told him I signed up to be a potential participant.
I was hoping he would be alive to watch me cross that finish line, he died November 2023. He was so well taken care of by the VA and we met some really impactful care givers that treated him like family. At his funeral it was incredible to see all the amazing men that fought with him in the war, it truly was a brotherhood. For all of them I am thankful. Participating in this walk is my way to try and give a small piece back for those who so selflessly serve our country.
