When Afton was just 9 months old, her parents received news that would change their lives forever—Afton was diagnosed with infantile scoliosis. This meant her tiny spine had a curve that needed special care.
Afton began a journey with Mehta casts, a series of plaster and fiberglass casts designed to gently correct her spine’s curve. Every few months, Afton would get a new cast, each one bringing her closer to a straighter spine. Despite the challenges, Afton faced each day with a smile, her courage shining through.
As Afton grew, so did her heart. She wanted to help other children who were on similar journeys. That’s when she discovered Higgy Bears, a wonderful nonprofit organization that provides special stuffed animals to children with scoliosis. These bears, with their tiny braces and supportive messages, bring comfort and companionship to kids who need it most.
