Britton Korbel & Denise Patrick's Story

Denise Lewis Patrick is a published author, poet, amateur artist and sometime dollmaker. Her books for children include Red Dancing Shoes, Finding Someplace, A Girl Named Rosa and American Girl titles No Ordinary Sound and Never Stop Singing. She’s also a contributor to the acclaimed anthology, We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices. She has worked as an editor and freelance writer and as an adjunct writing instructor at Nyack College and Montclair State University. She holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Orleans.

She and her husband have lived in Montclair for eighteen years, and all four of their creative sons attended Montclair Public Schools (Nishuane, Hillside, Glenfield Middle School and Montclair High). At Glenfield, Denise first volunteered and then became a manager in the much-loved Writers Room Program, and later volunteered at Glenfield as co-mentor of the “Inklings” afterschool writing group with teacher Elaine Rose. She’s always been an avid supporter of student writers and artists at both Glenfield and Montclair High.

We, as a family, have been very fortunate to benefit from all the experiences the Montclair schools have to offer. In my role as an author, I visit schools and libraries, meeting children all over the country. I’ve seen over and over how important it is to nurture and encourage young people to reach for their dreams. As a mother—and now grandmother—I know this to be true! I’ll always be on call for MFEE, because their mission is to help assure that parents and children in our community have the tools they need to thrive.”

Britton Korbel is a 24 year old graphic designer, animator, and muralist. His works include credits on animating for Thom Yorke’s “Last I Heard (...He Was Circling The Drain)” and Bright Eyes’ “Mariana Trench”. He works as a freelance graphic designer and has collaborated with Montclair groups and businesses for work and charity. In his free time and as a part time job he has been creating murals around New Jersey since he was 16 years old.

A graduate of Montclair High school, Britton has lived in Montclair his entire life. He used art and animation as a medium to succeed in school and now is an advocate for the arts to stay prevalent in the Montclair school system. He has worked with MFEE on multiple occasions to promote art and the message of strong community values.
