Olivia Poglianich's Story

I’m participating in this year’s Rainbow Run in support of my beloved Uncle Tony, raising money for the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center! My Uncle passed suddenly in January, just 2 days before we were going to have one of our monthly dinners. I have so many fond memories with him, from riding on the back of his vespa when I was a little girl sharing a trip together to Italy and Croatia (visiting the hometown of his parents/my grandparents who immigrated to the US in 1951), to laughing in the streets of Barcelona when I studied abroad. We've also had a chance to explore the city of Medellin together in adulthood, a place we both love, and always shared laughs over dinner or music no matter where in the world we may be! Uncle Tony and I also share the same alma mater, Cornell University, which he was a huge advocate of. I always slept with a little Cornell teddy bear he got me as a child and never did I imagine that I'd wind up going there, too. He was always one of my biggest supporters, too, and I'll never forget him and Uncle Peter coming out to dance on a Wednesday night in Brooklyn supporting my first DJ gig in NYC. Raising money for Callen-Lowe is especially important as my uncle Tony has always been one of their biggest advocates, but recently, my own identity has evolved to identify with the LGBTQ community, too. Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ health care. Since the days of Stonewall, Callen-Lorde has been transforming lives in LGBTQ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, Callen-Lorde is continuously pioneering research, advocacy, and education to drive positive change around the world, because of a shared belief that health care is a human right.
