Hello Y'all
I'm so excited to be apart of ActiveMinds commitment to funding and supporting mental health. I myself have been effected by the stresses and pressures of college that have had a toll on my mental health. Thankfully, I have resources at my school to help me manage my emotions and understand the experiences Im going through, especially as a first generation student. The reason I say that is because I just learned in a Leadership for New Students Transition course that soon, a few newly admitted students at my school will be first generation students. Theses are students who will transition from high school to college and will classify in Generation Z (born 1995-2010). I learned that they are the most racially diverse group of students who are determined, thoughtful, compassionate and open-minded which (in my experience, so far) is super vital to have as a student pursuing higher education, PERIOD. There journey is just to come, but at some point they will experience bad days because as anyone knows, life doesn't stop, even if your in college. The phrase "Life happens" means much more than a bump in the road of life. Some things in "life" do prevent students form pursing higher education, but knowing students like Generation Z will have the skills to overcome what "life" may through at them. ActiveMinds helps students who do go through obstacles understand they don't have to succumb to long -term failure, which will effect the way they see themselves and their abilities. Knowing a resource can do that makes me hopeful of a bright future.
The last thing I will add is, students like me who have pressures to not let others down, remain financially stable, and make good decisions, weighs a ton. Employers now demand students like Generation Z's to work in teams, have communication skills and problem solve, yet what this shows is the need to address mental health and wellness, considering anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues facing students today. I believe any donation to support first generation students and all students in Generation Z is a step further to addressing mental health in order to maintain resilience and academic success that is the goal for a students life-time. They then can take this with them into the workforce and countries globally to spread the acceptance and importance of mental health. Thank you to ActiveMinds for kick-starting this goal and thank you to all who believe in a healthy future. Hook'em!
