PayPal serves as the default donate button for many groups, teams, and nonprofits, and for good reason: their fees are among the lowest in the industry. However, PayPal's donation form is missing key functionality, customization options, and fee transparency, which actually results in at least a 2% higher fee than you would experience using Givebutter (see "Pricing" section below). Additionally, despite the fact that PayPal owns Venmo, they still do not offer a Venmo integration with their donation forms, which is indicitative of the company's dedication to innovating in this space. PayPal should be a payment option, not a full payment form.
Givebutter offers a simple yet powerful donation form for collecting donations, dues, and other payments, which you can embed right your website as a donate button/form or host on Givebutter.com. This same form powers payments all across the Givebutter platform, and can be fully customized to meet your payment processing needs.
✔ Beautiful, donor-centric pages
✔ Add GIFs, drawings, images to donations
✔ Personalized pages with leaderboards
Doesn't offer support for fundraising pages. 💔
Givebutter offers fundraising pages that place a big emphasis on the supporters behind a fundraising campaign, which creates a living, breathing campaign experience full of stories and creative messages of support. Givebutter is fully optimized for team and group fundraising and allows for individual members to join campaigns, customize their pages, and easily receive credit for donations they help bring in. These same pages are the foundation for Events, which is discussed next.
✔ Sell unlimited paid and free tickets
✔ Ask for optional donations on top of each ticket and from those who can't attend
✔ Add event details such as Google Maps, Add to Calendar button, etc
Doesn't offer support for selling tickets to events :(
Givebutter makes it dead-simple to sell tickets to events while maximizing dollars raised through a combination of encouraging attendees to add donations to their ticket purchases, and allowing you to still collect donations from people who can't attend. Additionally, events on Givebutter come with every fundraising feature built-in, so you have the option to set a fundraising goal, invite your team to create personalized fundraising pages, engage with donors and attendees in the supporter feed, and more.
✔ Track donors, members, and fundraisers over time
✔ Make custom receipts and engage donors from dashboard
✔ Easily integrate with 1,000+ third-party apps
✔ Track donors over time
✔ Integrate with select third-party apps
PayPal has added better reporting and tracking functionality in recent years, but unless all you are doing is collecting payments through PayPal then it's unlikely you will find their dashboard useful. Aside from the many product advantages of Givebutter mentioned above, Givebutter can act as a central donation hub across not only your general donations, but also for all of your fundraising campaigns and events.
Givebutter provides a suite of backend tools not on PayPal that are particularly useful for groups, teams, and nonprofits. On Givebutter you can invite and manage roles for unlimited members, customize donor receipts, easily withdraw funds via bank deposit or paper check, integrate with thousands of third-party apps such as Mailchimp, CRMs such as Salesforce, and more. Perhaps the most important distinction between the Givebutter and PayPal dashboards is Givebutter's focus on tracking and managing not only your donors but also your members, fundraisers, and even chapters if you have them.
✔ Accept Venmo
✔ Transparent Fees
✔ Form Customization
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

PayPal offers some of the lowest per-transaction fees in the industry, but unfortunately these fees are hidden from donors and there is no option for donors to cover them, resulting in a lost opportunity to raise more and provide donors with full transparency.
Givebutter also offers transaction fees lower than 5%, but on Givebutter over 95% of donors voluntarily cover the fees when donating, resulting in an average overall fee to fundraisers of just 0.5% - the lowest in the industry.
Please note that for the purposes of this comparison we used the pricing for Givebutter's Collect product, since it is the closest in relevance to PayPal's full offering.
