What do a medical school endowment, a virtual YMCA fundraiser, a rare disease research campaign, and an auction featuring artwork made by rescued farm animals have in common?
Together, they helped raise more than $4.5M for causes that matter. All using Givebutter.
No two organizations followed the same recipe. Some leaned into peer-to-peer fundraising. Others found success through events, auctions, or online giving.
Each used Givebutter to make it easier for supporters to participate and connect with the mission, while helping their teams trade spreadsheets, manual exports, and disconnected systems for more time spent storytelling and building community.
Their fundraising software case studies are proof that with the right tools, a sprinkle of creativity, and plenty of heart, amazing things can happen. Let's take a look. 💛
7 nonprofits that crushed their fundraising goals with Givebutter
Seven nonprofits, seven unique challenges, and seven fundraising success stories powered by Givebutter. Here’s the spread:
1. Unless U: Raised $111K+ online after replacing a patchwork of fundraising tools 🎊
Unless U is a small, Alabama-based nonprofit dedicated to helping adults with disabilities continue learning, building relationships, and developing vocational skills long after high school.
For Marketing and Development Director Marye Grace Sauermann, supporting that mission meant juggling multiple tools. Donor records lived in one platform, email communications in another, and fundraising events somewhere else entirely.
That disconnected setup was putting valuable supporter relationships at stake:
“We were using Bloomerang and Mailchimp, but I could never get Zapier to work. I felt like I was always missing contacts.” — Marye Grace Sauermann, Marketing and Development Director, Unless U
After months of searching for a better solution, she discovered Givebutter.
The platform brought donor management, email communications, and fundraising events together in one place. Better yet, Givebutter's core features were free, allowing Unless U to test drive the platform without stretching its budget.

Once the team made the switch, it was clear they'd found the missing ingredient.
For the first time, they had a complete view of more than a decade of donor relationships, allowing them to spend less time managing software and more time connecting with supporters.
As the organization grew more comfortable with Givebutter, they upgraded to Givebutter Plus to unlock additional automation and marketing capabilities.
For Marye Grace, one of the biggest wins was the drag-and-drop email builder and ready-made templates:
“With Mailchimp, it would have taken an hour or two to make a full email. Now with Givebutter Plus, I can knock them out in twenty minutes.” — Marye Grace Sauermann, Marketing and Development Director, Unless U
With everything working together, fundraising became much easier to manage. Whether promoting events like Unless U Got Talent, communicating with supporters, or collecting online donations through its website, the team no longer had to jump between multiple systems to get the job done.
The payoff was hard to miss. In less than a year, Unless U raised more than $111K online. Turns out keeping everything under one roof was the butter way to work. 🧈
2. GOSUMEC Foundation USA: Grew from 25 supporters to a $1.5M fundraising movement 💪
As a busy physician and Co-Founder of GOSUMEC Foundation USA, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering need- and merit-based medical students at GSMC in India, Dr. Sanjay Bindra wasn't searching for a complicated fundraising solution.
His simple wish was to find a place where he could manage donations and communicate with supporters without juggling multiple platforms.
Givebutter checked those boxes, and then some.
What started as a convenient way to track donations and stay connected with alumni quickly became the foundation for a thriving donor community.
Using Givebutter's donor engagement and nonprofit marketing tools, Dr. Bindra could organize supporters into donor segments, send targeted emails and text messages, and deliver more personalized communications at scale.
He shared:
“Givebutter helped us create a streamlined workflow that not only handled the admin aspects but also gave us the flexibility to communicate creatively with our community. I really love the ease with which I'm able to also communicate using segmented lists and tailor their journey with our foundation. The results speak for themselves.” — Dr. Sanjay Bindra, Co-Founder & President, GOSUMEC Foundation USA
Thanks to Givebutter's event management features, he was also able to bring alumni together through gatherings across the country, creating deeper connections within the community and growing support for the foundation's mission.
And as GOSUMEC grew, Givebutter continued to grow with it.
When the organization moved toward a permanent endowment and began securing multi-year donor commitments, Givebutter's pledge management tools helped Dr. Bindra keep track of every pledge with ease.
The impact surprised even him. In just over a year, GOSUMEC grew its supporter base from 25 alumni to more than 550 donors and supporters while raising over $1.5M.
And perhaps most impressively, he did it all while running the organization without a dedicated staff:
“Becoming the first medical school in India with a permanent endowment to support all need- and merit-based students into perpetuity is a groundbreaking achievement. Doing this single-handedly with no staff… Givebutter has been a godsend for us.” — Dr. Sanjay Bindra, Co-Founder & President, GOSUMEC Foundation USA
3. The Summit Center: Turned a walkathon into a $296K community-powered success 🎉
The Summit Center supports individuals with autism and developmental disabilities across Western New York. Like many nonprofits, it relies on community fundraising events to bring people together and generate support for its mission.
The only problem? The backend didn’t feel nearly as joyful as the events themselves.
Before Givebutter, the team had to piece together registration, fundraising, and donor data across separate tools. Every extra platform meant extra admin work, and every manual export pulled time away from the people at the heart of those events.
When it came time to organize its Autism Walk, The Summit Center used Givebutter’s registration fundraising flow for the very first time, and the difference was immediate.
Instead of asking supporters to jump between registration and fundraising tools, everything happened in one place. Participants could sign up for the walk, create or join a fundraising team, set a goal, and start rallying friends and family around the cause in just a few clicks.
Meanwhile, Givebutter's integration with the organization's CRM kept donor records and fundraising activity in sync automatically, eliminating hours of manual data entry behind the scenes.
What started as a simpler registration process quickly became a community-wide fundraising effort. Families cheered each other on through the supporter feed, teams rallied support from their networks, and participants became active fundraisers from the moment they signed up.
As Hayley Joyce, Development Coordinator at The Summit Center, put it:
“It was seamless. Everyone who wanted to participate could do everything they needed to in one place. And for our team, it was just as smooth on the backend.” — Hayley Joyce, Development Coordinator, The Summit Center
By the time the campaign wrapped up, that momentum had helped power 189 fundraising teams, engage more than 2,800 participants and supporters, and raise nearly $296K for The Summit Center's mission.
Safe to say that registration flow rose to the occasion. 🍞
4. L-CMD Research Foundation: Turned one family's fight into a $2M fundraising breakthrough 💛
When Hannah Lowe's son, Austin, was diagnosed with LMNA-related congenital muscular dystrophy (L-CMD), doctors told her there was no treatment and no cure.
Determined to change that, she launched the L-CMD Research Foundation with an ambitious goal: to raise $2M before Austin's second birthday to help fund a gene therapy that could save his life and the lives of other children like him.
The campaign, aptly named 2 Before 2, gave supporters a clear mission and a clear deadline. And what began as a modest fundraising effort quickly grew into a community-driven movement, which Hannah herself hadn’t expected:
“We weren't expecting it to blow up the way it did. But people showed up—friends, family, and total strangers—and they wanted to help.” — Hannah Lowe, Founder, L-CMD Research Foundation
Givebutter's peer-to-peer fundraising tools helped turn that momentum into action. Supporters could create personalized fundraising pages, form teams, and rally their own networks around the cause, multiplying the campaign's reach far beyond Hannah's immediate circle.
As Hannah said:
“I would say the biggest chunk of our success so far has been in peer-to-peer fundraising.” — Hannah Lowe, Founder, L-CMD Research Foundation
By the end of the campaign, 27 fundraising teams and more than 2,000 supporters had helped raise over $2.07M, surpassing the foundation's original goal and accelerating research that could change the lives of children and families affected by L-CMD.
And while raising more than $2M is certainly worth raising a toast to, the campaign's biggest impact may have really been the hope it created. What began as a fundraising effort became a platform for education, advocacy, and community for families affected by L-CMD.
“This isn’t just about Austin. It’s about giving hope to other families like ours.” — Hannah Lowe, Founder, L-CMD Research Foundation
Now that's a ripple effect worth celebrating. 💛
5. Unity Farm Sanctuary: Exceeded its auction goal by 521% and raised $150K+ ⚡
Unity Farm Sanctuary is a safe haven for rescued farm animals outside of Boston, where staff and volunteers work to promote compassion through animal care and humane education.
As the organization grew, Executive Director and Co-Founder Kathy Halamka knew its fundraising experience needed an upgrade. The existing donation portal felt outdated and uninspiring, and supporters had limited flexibility in how they gave.
After exploring several options, Unity Farm Sanctuary made the switch to Givebutter.
Kathy was drawn to the platform's ease of use, variety of features, and donor-friendly experience that made giving feel simple and flexible. In her words:
"At Givebutter, we love the way that the donor's in the driver's seat. They get to pick the tips. They get to pick whether or not they cover any of the fees. Do they want to be monthly? Do they want to do something specific they get to plan? They get to control it." — Kathy Halamka, UFS Executive Director & Co-Founder
That flexibility is powered by Givebutter's optional tipping model, which lets supporters decide whether or not they'd like to leave a tip or help cover processing fees.
And thanks to the Givebutter Guarantee, nonprofits still keep 100% of every donation they receive, regardless of what donors choose.
With a fundraising experience that finally matched the spirit of its mission, Unity Farm Sanctuary started getting creative.
Using Givebutter's auction software, the team launched Art for the Animals, a fundraiser with a twist: artwork created by the sanctuary's rescued animals, using animal-safe painting techniques.
Supporters could bid on original pieces while directly supporting the animals who inspired them.
The auction raised more than $5K and exceeded its fundraising goal by 521%.
But that was just the beginning.
Using Givebutter's event ticketing features, Unity Farm Sanctuary also hosted farm tours and special events that gave supporters a chance to visit the sanctuary, learn more about its work, and connect with the animals they support through a simple registration experience.
A simple fundraising refresh soon grew into something much bigger. In just six months, Unity Farm Sanctuary raised more than $150K, engaged over 750 supporters, and mobilized more than 70 fundraising teams.
For Kathy, the impact went beyond the numbers. Givebutter gave the sanctuary more ways to share its story, connect supporters to its mission, and show exactly how donations would make a difference:
"Without the features in our fundraising being so positive and so easy to access, I don't know how we would support our programs with something less flexible than this—because Givebutter allows us to be very expansive in a very attractive way to tell people why we do what we do and what's going to happen with their donation. Pretty amazing stuff." — Kathy Halamka, UFS Executive Director & Co-Founder
6. God's Secret Service Agents Foundation: Raised 128% of its goal with an award-winning campaign 🏆
God's Secret Service Agents Foundation is a faith-based nonprofit that mobilizes volunteers to carry out secret acts of kindness in communities across Kenya, Jamaica, and Mexico.
With growing support for its mission, Founder and President Dr. Vivien Lattibeaudiere needed a fundraising setup that could keep up.
GSSA didn't yet have a way to collect donations directly on its website or a CRM to keep donor information and transaction data organized as support for its mission grew.
After exploring several options, another nonprofit recommended Givebutter, and Dr. Lattibeaudiere quickly saw why:
“We really liked the Givebutter solution—it was free and very easy to use. We loved all of the classes and the support from the customer service representatives. We got lots and lots of help when we were setting up our platform and our CRM.” — Dr. Vivien Lattibeaudiere, President and Founder, GSSA
Givebutter first helped GSSA tackle the essentials. Donation buttons and website widgets gave the organization a seamless way to accept gifts online, while Givebutter's CRM helped keep donor information and transaction records organized in one place.
Then came the fun part. Through Givebutter's fundraising pages, GSSA could tell richer stories about its work using photos, videos, campaign updates, and peer-to-peer fundraising tools that turned supporters into active participants in the mission.
For its Multigenerational Community Center Building campaign, that meant giving supporters a front-row seat to the journey. Regular campaign updates on the supporter feed helped donors track fundraising progress and follow the project's journey from campaign to construction.
The result? More than 80 supporters helped GSSA raise 128% of its fundraising goal and nearly $10K beyond its original target.
The campaign was also later recognized as the "Most Creative Campaign" during Givebutter's Black Philanthropy Month celebration, earning an additional $5K donation from Givebutter.
Not bad for a nonprofit whose mission is to stay out of the spotlight. ✨
7. Summit Area YMCA: Transformed a pandemic setback into a $377K fundraising win 🌟
The Summit Area YMCA relies on community fundraising to support programs ranging from childcare to food insecurity relief.
So when COVID-19 forced the organization to cancel its annual campaign kickoff event, the team had to rethink its entire fundraising strategy. Fast.
With time running out, the YMCA turned to Givebutter to launch its first-ever virtual fundraising campaign.
To recreate the energy of an in-person event online, the team used Givebutter's livestreaming tools to share stories, celebrate impact, and bring supporters together from wherever they were.
At the same time, Givebutter's team fundraising features turned volunteers into fundraisers, giving each team its own fundraising page, progress thermometer, and easy-to-use sharing tools.
The simplicity was exactly what the team had hoped for. As team member Kaitlin put it:
“We were trying to find something user-friendly and fun—something our volunteers wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time learning, but that would still make a big impact.” — Kaitlin, Team Member, The Summit Area YMCA
The result was a virtual campaign that felt surprisingly personal.
Supporters tuned into livestreams, fundraising teams rallied their networks, and donors left messages of encouragement on the supporter feed, creating a sense of community even while everyone was apart.
And while the campaign was born out of necessity, it quickly became one of the YMCA's most successful fundraising efforts, engaging more than 500 supporters, activating 33 fundraising teams, and raising over $377K for the organization's mission.
Along the way, the YMCA discovered that some of its most valuable fundraising lessons came from an event that almost didn't happen at all. Kaitlin shared:
“We're so happy to have found [Givebutter]. [...] We're thinking we'll never go back to fully in-person; it may just be hybrid from now on.” — Kaitlin, Team Member, The Summit Area YMCA
Looks like the YMCA found a recipe worth keeping. 🧈
What these fundraising success stories have in common
From a rare disease research campaign that raised more than $2M to an animal art auction that exceeded its goal by 521%, these organizations may have had different missions, but their success stories share a few familiar ingredients:
- Free tools helped lower the barrier to action. Whether they were replacing outdated software or launching a brand-new campaign, many nonprofits appreciated being able to explore Givebutter's core features without taking on additional platform costs.
- One platform replaced a patchwork of systems. CRM, fundraising, events, marketing, auctions, and donor engagement tools worked together instead of living in separate places, helping teams save time and reduce manual work.
- Donor-friendly experiences encouraged participation. From registering for an event to joining a fundraising team, making a donation, or following campaign updates, supporters were able to get involved without unnecessary friction.
- Human support remained part of the experience. Beyond the software itself, certain organizations pointed to onboarding help and responsive customer service as valuable parts of the journey.
The gist: These stories suggest that when fundraising tools are accessible, connected, and supporter-friendly, many organizations are able to break through the busywork and focus on raising some serious dough for their mission. 🥖

FAQs
What types of nonprofits use Givebutter?
From schools and faith-based organizations to animal rescues, community programs, and charitable nonprofits, Givebutter supports a wide variety of missions.
While its free core features make it especially appealing to small- and mid-sized organizations, larger nonprofits also use Givebutter to streamline fundraising, events, donor management, and supporter engagement.
How much does Givebutter cost for nonprofits?
For many nonprofits, Givebutter costs exactly what they like to hear: $0.
Givebutter's core fundraising tools are free to use, which means you can create donation forms, fundraising pages, events, auctions, and more without paying platform fees.
Here's how: when you enable optional donor tips, your nonprofit pays $0 in platform fees and $0 in processing fees. If a donor doesn't cover the cost themselves, the Givebutter Guarantee steps in and covers it for you—so you still keep 100% of what you raise.
Prefer to turn tips off? That's fine too. A flat 3% platform fee applies, plus standard payment processing (2.9% + 30¢ for cards, 1.9% + 30¢ for ACH). You can choose to pass those fees on to donors, make them optional, or absorb them yourself. We’re nothing if not flexible.
Need a few extra bells and whistles? Givebutter Plus adds advanced automation, marketing, and productivity tools. But as many of the success stories above show, plenty of nonprofits are already raising serious dough with the free tool alone.
Can small nonprofits really raise significant funds online?
They sure can! And some of the stories in this article are proof of that.
Successful online fundraising isn't always about having the biggest budget or the largest team. More often, it's about making the most of your resources and giving supporters easy ways to get involved.
With the right tools (like Givebutter) in place, even small nonprofits can launch campaigns, build donor relationships, host events, and raise impressive amounts online, sometimes far more than they ever expected.
Next year, you could be one of our leading fundraising software case studies.
What features do these fundraising software case studies use most?
While every organization used Givebutter differently, a few features showed up again and again:
- Donor management (CRM): Keep donor information, giving history, and supporter engagement in one place instead of across multiple systems.
- Fundraising events and ticketing: Manage registrations, sell tickets, host virtual or in-person events, and keep everything connected to your donor data.
- Peer-to-peer fundraising: Empower supporters to create fundraising pages, form teams, and rally their own networks around your cause.
- Donation forms and fundraising pages: Make it easy for supporters to give online while sharing your story through branded campaign pages.
- Marketing and donor engagement tools: Send targeted emails, campaign updates, and other communications to keep supporters informed and involved.
The butter part? Many organizations combined several of these tools together to create seamless fundraising experiences for both their teams and their supporters.
