August is Black Philanthropy Month, an annual celebration of Black giving and a call to action for racial equity in nonprofit fundraising. This year was the first time Givebutter formally joined in on these festivities, and we were so excited and honored to uplift Black changemakers in the Butter Fam all month long. This effort also included a new Givebutter Gives Back initiative to donate $10K to Black-led organizations using the Givebutter platform during Black Philanthropy Month. 🎉
Read on to see how Black changemakers used Givebutter to raise funds for important causes and the complete list of Givebutter Gives Back donation recipients!
How Givebutter celebrated Black Philanthropy Month 2022
Black Philanthropy Month has brought together funders and changemakers from across the globe for over a decade. Givebutter was proud to join them as an official partner for the first time this year. The theme for Black Philanthropy Month 2022 was "The Fierce Urgency of Now." Givebutter's Community and Partnerships Lead, Floyd Jones, was invited to speak at the global summit led by the Women Invested to Save the Earth (WISE) Fund.
Floyd also had the opportunity to sit down with WISE Fund Director and the Founder of Black Philanthropy Month, Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, for an exclusive interview to learn more about her inspiring story and the growing movement for racial equity in philanthropy.
On Juneteenth, Givebutter announced its $10K initiative and invited Black-led organizations and nonprofits that predominantly support and uplift Black communities to submit their campaigns throughout August. The response was incredible. In the following weeks, Givebutter received more than 150 campaign applications, and these campaigns raised more than $327K in donations for Black-led nonprofits!
On August 31, Givebutter announced the winning campaigns during a live celebration. Five winners were selected to receive Most Active Campaign donations of $1,000 each, and one special fundraiser received a $5,000 donation for being the Most Creative Campaign.
Black changemakers that blew us away
The Most Creative Campaign
Done for Didi is a "radical initiative to build transformative futures" and the recipient of Givebutter's $5K Black Philanthropy Month donation for its fundraiser, Forty Acres And A School. This fundraiser is a community effort to "change the redlining of property into green: a community farm in Massachusetts growing food and healing medicine, with money going directly into the hands of Black folks."
With 61 new donors just from Juneteenth to the end of Black Philanthropy Month, this campaign is well on its way to reaching its $1M goal!
5 Most Active Campaigns
These campaigns received the most donations and rallied the most support from June 19 to August 29.
Unprecedented Chicago 👨🏿🎓
Unprecedented Chicago's mission is "equip young Black men with the necessary tools needed to reach success, uplift their communities, and become leaders while shifting the culture around them." Its 3rd Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on Givebutter celebrated 48 new donors during Black Philanthropy Month.
Leaders are Readers 📚
Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute helps "thousands of students find joy in reading and discover their leadership potential." The 47 new donations to its Leaders are Readers campaign will go a long way in organizing classroom visits, read-alouds, and diverse book donations "to bring positive messaging and relatable characters to youth."
The Multivrs Is Illuminated 🎸
The Multivrs is Illuminated describes its 143rd Dimension festival as "a music and art festival centering Queer Black and Brown artists across diasporas. The festival is always 100% free, with free food and a dedication to accessibility. The event's goal was to provide an uplifting and healing space where people can revel in music and joy." They brought in 32 more donations to keep the party going!
United Colors of Cancer 💛
With 22 new donors for its COLOR THE CURE campaign, United Colors of Cancer will build on its incredible mission of empowering the BIPOC cancer community and increasing BIPOC cancer survivorship. UCC works "to #colorthedata and #colorthecare by increasing the number of BIPOC participants in clinical trials, so doctors, patients, and lawmakers have the critical information they need to make informed decisions and save lives."
The Black Joy Retreat 💪🏿
Race and Faith's Black Joy Retreat "works to alleviate racial trauma and create a healing space for Black individuals and families to have fun and rest in an affirming, safe atmosphere." Twenty new donors during Black Philanthropy Month helped raise more funds to "provide care packages to people of the global majority and provide financial support for those wanting to attend The Black Joy retreat this Labor Day weekend!"
