Corporate donation matching is a powerful force multiplier for employees and nonprofits, turning $100 donations into $200, $300, or even $500 in charitable impact.

In this article, we’ll explore the top 10 donation matching companies every nonprofit—and their donors—should know about, plus the key details on how to participate.

The untapped potential of corporate matching donation programs

More than 26 million people work for corporations that offer donation matching programs—including two-thirds of the Fortune 500—but few nonprofits take advantage of this incredible fundraising opportunity.

$4-$7 billion in matching gift revenue goes unclaimed every year. For employees, that's like walking past reserves of cash that could be supporting your favorite causes. For nonprofits, it represents countless missed opportunities.

How do you know if a company matches donations?

If your nonprofit is looking to take advantage of employee matching gift programs, knowing which companies match donations is a key first step. Sometimes, the answer takes a little digging—whether through employee benefits information on the company's website or by contacting their HR or community outreach department directly.

One way to save yourself hours of scrolling through corporate policies for company matching information is through Givebutter's integration with Double the Donation, which enables your supporters to find matching opportunities with their employer right from your donation forms and fundraising pages. The software also offers custom automated emails for following up with supporters who qualify.

It's also helpful to know the criteria a company has for its matching program, which ideally includes the following:

  • Low minimums: The lowest dollar amount an employee can donate to be eligible for matching. This allows donors of all levels to contribute and have their donations matched.
  • High maximums: The highest dollar amount the company will match. Higher thresholds mean donors can make a greater impact for the causes they care about.
  • Generous ratios: 1-to-1 matching ratios are most common for corporate giving, but some companies offer 2-to-1 or even 3-to-1 ratios, which can help your organization bring in even more critical funds.

How to ask a company to match donations

Asking a company to match donations or participate in other forms of corporate sponsorship can feel a little intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. As enticing as the big names in this article may be, you will likely have more success if you start your outreach with local businesses.

Who to contact

To nail your ask, contact the key decision maker in the company. For smaller businesses, the key decision maker may be the owner, general manager, or someone else in a leadership position. In larger organizations, this is typically the corporate social responsibility (CSR) director, community relations manager, corporate foundation executive, or chief marketing officer.

How to make a persuasive ask

Companies are more likely to donate when they understand the impact of their matching donations. When reaching out:

✔ Clearly explain your mission and how the donation will be used

✔ Highlight the benefits of corporate philanthropy, like brand reputation and employee engagement

✔ Provide all necessary details, including donation matching limits, deadlines, and steps for participation

Turn matching gifts into strategic partnerships

Direct corporate outreach transforms traditional matching gifts into strategic partnerships, dramatically expanding your donor base and multiplying your impact beyond individual employee contributions. Through these partnerships, you can unlock larger institutional support and create lasting relationships that benefit both organizations.

Showcase your matching donation sponsors

Givebutter’s matching donation feature enables nonprofits to showcase a matching individual or corporate sponsor on any fundraising page or donation form. This way, donors can immediately see the impact of their contribution as it doubles (or triples or quadruples!), and your sponsor gets recognition and thanks right there on your campaign page.

You and your sponsor can determine the maximum amount and time frame. When you enable the match, every donation that comes in is automatically doubled on your campaign progress bar and supporter feed.
