Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: How to support AAPI fundraisers or host your own

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month has been celebrated every May since it was signed into law by Congress in 1990. The term AAPI encompasses people who have come from the continent of Asia and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

AAPI Heritage Month is a month-long celebration dedicated to raising awareness about people of AAPI descent, the many ways they have enriched and strengthened the United States, and their unique and inspiring cultural heritage. It’s also an opportunity to combat the increase in hate crimes targeting these demographics.

What is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month?

AAPI Heritage Month is a way to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of the AAPI community to America’s history. It is also a powerful way to build awareness of and bring an end to the discrimination and hate targeting this demographic (Did you know that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. has seen an unprecedented rise in hate crimes targeting Asian communities?).

AAPI Heritage Month started out as a commemorative week in the late 1970s. After over a decade of proclamations from different presidents, it turned into the month-long celebration we know and love today. AAPI Heritage Month happens in May in honor of two historical events from the AAPI community:

  • May 7, 1843: The first Japanese to immigrate to the United States
  • May 10, 1869: The completion of the transcontinental railroad which was built primarily by Chinese workers
